Mount Cesima, Italy

The goat herder was tired. He had not had much sleep the past few weeks, and now he had to take two teenage boys with guns onto the mountain. Still, he was being fed, which was more than many of his countrymen could claim.

When he had been roused from his tent two hours before by one of Major MacMahon’s men, he had been brought to the saddle ridge again and introduced to the boys. One was short, with glasses and a scarred face. He looked impossibly young to be a soldier, but he carried the heavy American rifle, the one the Americans called the Garand, with ease and confidence. His companion was taller and slim, with sandy blond hair and a German surname. He carried a bolt-action rifle with a scope, and he seemed just as confident as his partner.

Major MacMahon didn’t seem impressed with either, though, and MacMahon’s translator told the goat herder that MacMahon thought the boys were wasting their time. They would be of no use to Captain Berger from Mount Cesima, but the boys were emphatic that those were their orders. So be it. If the Americans wanted to pay him to take some teenagers on a sightseeing tour of Mount Cesima, that was fine by him.
